Garage Floor Recoating and Removal in Reno, Nevada

If the coating on your Reno garage floor is peeling, lifting where the hot tires sit, yellowing under the sun, or showing bond failure along the edges, rolling another coat over the top will not fix the problem. The new coating only bonds as well as whatever is underneath it. We strip failed coatings, grind back to clean concrete, repair the slab, and install a properly prepped replacement system that lasts. Removal plus replacement is a routine job for us across the Truckee Meadows.

Signs Your Current Coating Has Failed

How We Remove A Failed Coating

  1. Assess what is there. We test bond, identify the type of coating, check moisture, and inspect the underlying concrete.
  2. Strip the loose material. Anything that is lifting is scraped, popped, and bagged. This is usually the messy part.
  3. Diamond grind to clean concrete. A walk-behind diamond grinder takes the rest of the coating off and opens the concrete to a CSP 2 to CSP 3 profile.
  4. Edge work. Edges and corners that the walk-behind cannot reach get an edge grinder.
  5. Crack and pit repair. Any damage exposed during removal is patched.
  6. Vacuum. The slab is vacuumed clean to bare concrete. Now we are at the starting line for a proper install.
  7. New system install. From here it is a standard epoxy or polyaspartic install: base coat, flake or other decorative element, polyaspartic topcoat.

Recoat vs Full Strip: How We Decide

Not every old coating needs to come off. If the existing system is well-bonded, structurally sound, and only worn cosmetically, the right answer may be a roughing-up and a new topcoat. We test before we quote.

Existing Floor ConditionRecommendation
Well-bonded, worn topcoat onlySand, clean, recoat with polyaspartic topcoat
Yellowed but bondedRecoat with UV-stable topcoat if cosmetic only
Hot tire pickup in patchesStrip and replace - underlying prep is the problem
Peeling at edges or jointsStrip and replace - bond is failing
Blistering, bubbles, moisture signsStrip, moisture-test, install moisture-tolerant system
Generally failing across the floorStrip and replace

When in doubt we recommend the full strip and replace. A new topcoat over a failing layer is a waste of money because it inherits the failure underneath.

Why Reno Floors Fail Early

Three patterns explain most of the failed garage floor coatings we are asked to remove in Reno. First, the original installer skipped diamond grinding and relied on acid etching, which never gave the resin a real mechanical key into the concrete. Second, the original system did not include a UV-stable polyaspartic topcoat, so the floor yellowed and started breaking down from the top under Reno's sun. Third, moisture from the slab was never tested, and over time vapor pressure from below blistered the coating. Our replacement system addresses all three: real diamond grinding, polyaspartic topcoat, and moisture testing when the slab condition warrants it.
